Digging In

We made a poster during the first week of Mayhem that included thirty or so goals for the month. Yesterday we met at least half of them.

1)Get to Know our Three Rivers friends- we spent the morning moving chickens at farmer Dale's and grilled him on how we can get started as professional organic farmers.

2)Rip our bods- if you've never dug a seven foot hole in the kikar and then lifted a maple tree into it, well, that's why you're not buff. (see new toran at right, prior to raising)

3) Enjoy each other's company- There's no bonding time like drumming and blowing bubbles around a hot pan of stir fry, after lifting a maple tree into the kikar.

4) Detroit Basketball!- Okay, this isn't one of our goals, but it should be. The Pistons are in their sixth straight conference finals, any suggestions for renaming the gan in their honor?

Construction on the composting toilet starts Friday! Thanks Tony C.

Stay awake JJ

So we've had a busy three days since our last blog...maybe even five days. three busy days and one lazy one. We chopped down a toren. No we didn't. Thats a lie. Not true. We bought an axe to get the twigs off the side of the toren.

We rekindled our relationship with Dale. Our favorite farmer who is a CSA farmer and we love him. In exchange for our labors and love and tenderness, he gave us lettuces which we planted in our gan and a whole roll of drip tape. Then we came back to camp and installed it! It really works.

JJ and Oren have been training for the biathalon. They have a bet. Guess what it is.

today was our sixth compost run. Thats a lot of dirt.

update on the water. We HAVE it. first load of laundry complete.

Many old people came today. Ages range from 22-29. We had a feast around great conversation and spicy green beans. Jealous?

We had lunch at goldies. a great camp tradition. You've got to try the appetizer platter. Can you say fried ravioli? It's a Three River's classic.

Then we played speed scrabble.

The Gan is great. The Gan is now.

I caught a Fish

Today is Monday May 5th, (Cinco de Mayo)

Our Day started out pretty normally, with the malfunctioning alarm at 4:00am, but we all thought it was 8 so we got right to work. Just Kidding!! We went back to bed after a quick surfing Safari with the Beach Boys (our favorite alarm). Later that morning, after a breakfast of oranges, chocolate, old milk, and rice krispies, we shoveled lots of compost. After a quick lunch in the park, we planted a row of asparagus, and found some tires in the Meijer parking lot for the herb garden. It doesn't sound like a lot but it took us all day.

p.s. JJ caught seven fish.

The First Entry!!

Welcome to Mayhem!!
This is the true story of a bunch of college students working the land of Tavor to bring bountiful harvests during the summer. We are planting lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, cucumbers, sunflowers, carrots, turnips, and the rest of the salad bar. Even a couple of suprises your taste buds will ...taste. With a little bit of luck, and a lots of mad skills, there is gonna be mad amounts of delisouz greenz makin its way to your table.
We will blog every so often with updates on the Gan, the camp grounds, and funny things that happen along the way. The Gan is in good hands with a few green thumbs from Tavor and the Three Rivers community helping out. We have people working here from almost all seven Habonim Dror Camps across North America. And as Shelley always says, "Sheer Determination and perseverance are Tavor's arms in bringing life to the Gan. The daily struggle binds the tavorniks to their homes and even their chanichim feel it: Here we Plant!"
